Where Is Tungnath Temple Located?
The Tungnath Temple is situated near the beautiful hill station of Chopta in the Rudraprayag district of Uttrakhand.
Chopta is widely known as the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand” for its lush green meadows, forests, and mountain scenery. The trek to Tungnath starts from this beautiful town.
The temple is approximately 3680 meters above sea level and is the third temple of the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit. The location is one of the biggest reasons people fall in love with Tungnath—open mountain landscapes, fresh air, and the quiet sound of nature.
Story of Tungnath Temple
According to tradition, after the war of the Mahabharata, the Pandava brothers wanted to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the destruction caused by the war. But Shiva didn’t want to appear before them.
He took the form of a bull and tried to hide in the Himalayan region. When the Pandavas finally recognized him, Shiva disappeared into the ground. It is believed that different parts of his body appeared at different places.
His hump appeared in Kedarnath, arms in Tungnath, navel in Madhyamaheshwar, face in Rudranath, and his matted hair in Kalpeshwar.
Together, these five sacred places became known as the Panch Kedar. It is believed that the Tungnath temple was originally built by the Pandava brothers.
